The following sample is an excerpt from the introduction of Thinking Skills for Tests:

All academic tests measure the ability to think carefully and critically.  Children can benefit from practicing critical thinking skills in a test-taking format because it enables them to give their best performance on any type of test they might take.  Parents, teachers, schools, and agencies that administer tests all benefit when children perform to the best of their ability on any test that is administered to them.  Thinking Skills for Tests helps children do their best on tests by providing them with an opportunity to recognize how the critical thinking skills they already possess can be applied to a test.

Thinking Skills for Tests presents nine thinking skills that form the base of both verbal and nonverbal reasoning and logic.  In the process of practicing these nine basic thinking skills, children also will have the opportunity to practice listening and following directions, discuss their answers to assure them that they’re thinking carefully, and answer questions even when the answer is uncertain and the question is difficult.

This practice can build confidence, reduce anxiety, and remove obstacles that can hinder children from performing their best on tests.

Thinking Skills for Tests was prepared following ethical guidelines provided by the American Psychological Association and the National Council on Measurement in Education.  The content bears no strong resemblance to any actual assessment or specific items from any assessment.  Children who practice with Thinking Skills for Tests may perform better on standardized tests than they would without this practice, but their test scores will not rise beyond their actual ability levels.

Thinking Skills for Tests provides practice in the broad domain of critical thinking, and as such, these skills apply to a variety of standardized tests.
